History

In the Middles Ages, Rosetta was a port town of considerable commercial importance. This lasted until the early 19th Century when the al-Mahmoudia canal re-directed trade to the newly expanded harbours of Alexandria. Thus, medieval wizards from Europe visiting Egypt to consult with African wizards on Alchemy and Astronomy would have most probably landed at Rosetta and almost certainly brought the game of Quidditch with them.

The Rosetta Quidditch team was amongst the first formed in Africa and later led the african teams into the Quidditch World Cup by being one of the first non-european teams to enter the Cup in the 17th century. They did fairly well, having won the cup in 1698 and 1721.

In 1799 the ‘Rosetta Stone’ Stele was discovered by Muggles from France (the Rosetta Wizarding families having known about it all along and keeping it hidden til this point) and this event co-insided with a slump in the teams fortunes and playing ability. They consequentially gained the nickname of ‘the stones’ - as in playing about as well as one. The team decided to embrace the name and had a sand coloured Stele added to their vivid Lapis Lazuli robes.

The late 18th, early 19th century slump marks one of the Stones more infamous chapters. During an intra-African match against the Tchamba Charmers at a pitch near Giza, beater Ahmed Hamza, better known as “Old Lead Arm” , sent a poorly aimed but powerfully hit bludger crashing through the spectator stands (injuring 5) and well out of the pitch. The bludger broke the nose off the Great Sphinx and team members, trying to hide the mistake, used memory charms to spread rumors that soldiers of various European armies shot if off during target practice.

Chaser, Sami Zidan, developed the Stones “Arm of Ra” attack, which relies on the sun blinding one’s opponents and is therefore mostly ineffectual during games played in the British Isles.

Since that time the teams fortunes have ebbed and flowed like all teams, but lately they have made quite a comeback, defeating other notable African teams such as the Tchamba Charmers, the Sumbawanga Sunrays and the Patonga Proudstick. For the first time in History the Egyptian team is comprised solely of the Stones, a feat that has smashed the previously held number of 6 from one team ( held by the Proudsticks).
